Environmental Double Gold Success

James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor is proud to announce that is has achieved gold certification by both EarthCheck, the world’s leading certifier of travel and tourism organisations, and Qualmark, New Zealand tourism’s official quality assurance organisation.

The hotel is the first in Wellington to be awarded both of these prestigious certifications, and the second in New Zealand.

James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor has joined an elite group of industry leaders who, over a period of five years or more, have consistently demonstrated their commitment to the highest standards of environmental and social responsibilities.

Each year, leading up to both certifications, James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor submits 12 months of operational data to EarthCheck and Qualmark, to be benchmarked against industry best practice. A number of key indicators were measured; including energy and water consumption, total waste production, and community commitment.

The hotel has a ‘Green Team’ which is dedicated to developing conservation initiatives such as, composting all kitchen/food scraps, donating leftover toiletries to the Wellington City Mission, and bimonthly volunteer trips to Matiu/Somes Island. Approximately 46,500 litres of water is saved per year with a ‘Go Green’ initiative for guests who stay more than one night.

“Achieving EarthCheck Gold Certification is not an easy task to achieve,” explains EarthCheck CEO Stewart Moore. “There are no short cuts, no ways to buy your way in; it’s a matter of being able to prove the integrity of an organisation’s operational practices year-in and year-out, and then be willing to have everything verified by an independent, third party auditor.”

“This requires a commitment across all levels of an organisation, from the very top, all the way through to part time staff and even volunteers.” Moore comments.

Steve Martin, General Manager of the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor says that “five years of certification against both EarthCheck and Qualmark company standards is a true testament to the entire hotel’s enthusiasm and strong level of commitment to enhance our environmental, economic, and social sustainability initiatives. The team’s hard work has paid off, and we are proud to have been named an environmental leader within the industry.”
