Learn more about the history of Battery Point

Battery Point is named after the famous battery gun that was erected on the site of modern Princes Park in 1818 to protect the town from nautical threats. Decommissioned in 1878 for being too close to a residential area to be deemed safe, the name stuck, giving us what is now known as Battery Point.

Originally settled in the early 19th century as a Maritime village, most of the cottages were built in the 1840’s and 50’s and have now been fully restored. Today, Battery Point is a highly sought-after place to live and is home to some exclusive real estate.

There’s simply no better way to immerse yourself in the history of Battery Point than to take a historic walking tour around the village. With countless tours to choose from, you’ll explore the suburb’s history including Arthur’s Circus, which is located in the middle of the village green. Wandering through the tight streets and lanes, surrounded by cottages and old laneways, you’ll swear you’ve stepped back a century
