The history of the Royal Exhibition Centre

Celebrating 140 years in 2020, the Royal Exhibition Building has had many uses over its 140-year history. Originally built in 1880 for the Great Exhibition and housing the first Commonwealth Parliament in 1901, the building was the first in Australia to achieve World Heritage status in 2004.

These days the Royal Exhibition Building is an architectural landmark in Melbourne, with impressive galleries and an iconic dome. The building’s Great Hall continues to host exciting trade shows and cultural events, with The International Flower and Garden show being held here annually.

How to get to the Royal Exhibition Building

Getting to the Royal Exhibition Building is as simple as hopping on the Free City Circle Tram and hopping off at Victoria Parade. There are also car parks available or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, hop on a bike and take a ride up the bike lanes to the Royal Exhibition Building. 

Open daily from 9am to 5pm, tours of the Royal Exhibition Building operate most days and depart from the Melbourne Museum foyer at 2pm.
