Get to know Sky Stadium
Built in 1999, Wellington’s 48,000sqm Sky Stadium was constructed on reclaimed railway land to replace the aging Athletic Park which had fallen into disrepair and out of favour at the time. With the Basin Reserve also losing ODI cricket matches to other parts of the country, Westpac Stadium’s opening in 2000 couldn’t come quick enough. The name changed in 2020 to Sky Stadium.
Nowadays, Sky Stadium plays host to local sporting teams and national legends alike including the Hurricanes Super Rugby Team, Lions, Wellington Sevens, the A-League’s Wellington Phoenix, and home venue for All Blacks Rugby games.
From stars of the sporting field to the stage, Sky Stadium has also seen its fair share of superstars in recent years thanks to its larger capacity and world-class facilities. Think Eminem, Guns N’ Roses, Elton Jon, AC/DC and Bon Jovi. Just to name a few! It’s the one-stop venue for sporting events and concerts alike.
Sky Stadium is located right on the waterfront, close to public transport facilities, and just a kilometre out of the city. Book your room at the James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor online today and enjoy staying just 5 minutes drive from all the action.
