A Gold Standard Experience

The Qualmark Gold Sustainable Tourism Business Award and 4+ Star rating reflect our dedication to excellence, not only in comfort and service, but in environmental stewardship, community contribution, and operational integrity.

We remain committed to continuous improvement and to playing our part in making New Zealand a world-class sustainable visitor destination. We look forward to welcoming you to a stay that’s as thoughtful as it is memorable.

As Qualmark’s criteria are aligned with the globally recognised standards of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), our Gold Award reflects best-practice sustainability performance across business systems, environment, people, community, and health & safety.

Achieving Gold status places us among New Zealand’s leading sustainable tourism businesses. From strategic planning through to daily operations, sustainability guides our decisions.

Supporting Community & Culture

We are proud to contribute positively to the community in which we operate. For every direct booking made through our website, $2 is donated to the Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society, supporting habitat restoration, species protection, and environmental education.

Our design reflects the heritage and natural environment of Aotearoa, incorporating cultural motifs and storytelling throughout the property. We also cater to diverse cultural needs and provide accessible accommodation options to ensure all guests feel welcome.

Encouraging Responsible Travel

Through our Green Stay Programme, guests can opt for reduced housekeeping services in exchange for a food and beverage credit, a small choice that makes a meaningful difference.

We believe sustainability is a shared journey. By choosing to stay with us, guests are supporting a hotel committed to responsible tourism and positive impact.

Energy & Resource Efficiency

  • LED lighting installed throughout the property
  • Motion-sensor lighting in corridors, stairwells, and common areas
  • Guest room power key-card systems to minimise unnecessary energy use
  • Building Management System controlling air conditioning in unoccupied areas

Waste Reduction

  • Monthly waste reporting to monitor landfill, recycling, and cardboard volumes
  • Staff recycling training and split bins in guest rooms
  • Large-format refillable bathroom amenities to reduce single-use plastics
  • Removal of plastic water bottles, replaced with glass bottles and refill stations

Greener Spaces in the City

Sustainability extends to our design. The hotel features living walls, vertical greenery, and planted atrium spaces, bringing nature into the urban environment and enhancing biodiversity in the city centre.

We also prioritise local suppliers, supporting New Zealand producers wherever possible.
