Located in the heart of Hobart, the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery (TMAG) is a must-visit attraction for anyone with kids. With over 700,000 items on display, you'll get to discover both Tasmanian natural and human history at TMAG.
From dinosaurs, gigantic sea creatures, to Tasmanian Devils, the exhibits are diverse and engaging- some of them are even interactive!
Be sure to arrive early to beat the crowds and take your time to fully appreciate what’s on offer. On entry, ask the friendly staff about guided tours or special events that might be happening during your visit.
Got small children? Check out the mapiya lumi exhibit meaning “around here” TMAG's long-term interactive play and learn experience for children 0-7 years. This exhibition is a specially developed, age-appropriate museum experience for engaging play and learning for younger children, centered around the palawa culture (The Tasmanian Aboriginal people.)
There is also a café on site for drinks and snacks, and a gift shop to take home a fluffy or education souvenir. A 2-minute walk across at the lights in front of the Hotel to Dunn Place and you’ll be at the main gate. Open daily from 10am-4pm, closed most public holidays but general admission is free! Some special exhibits may attract an entry fee.
