Cataract Gorge

Cataract Gorge brings a taste of the wilderness right to the edge of Launceston, just a 15-minute walk from the city centre. From Hotel Grand Chancellor Launceston, you can walk in via Kings Bridge and be among the Gorge’s river and bushland scenery in no time.

Ride the Gorge Scenic Chairlift across First Basin, home to the world’s longest single chairlift span at 308 metres, or explore on foot along tracks suited to different fitness levels. Cross the Alexandra Suspension Bridge, wander through the Victorian Cliff Grounds and spot resident peacocks in the gardens.

First Basin has a free public swimming pool, with a café and restaurant nearby for coffee, snacks or lunch. You can also join a guided walking tour to learn more about the Gorge’s landscape, history and local stories.
