Some of Wellington's best food comes out of an alley. Hannah's Laneway runs between Leeds and Eva Streets in Te Aro, through the brick buildings of the old Hannah's shoe factory, and these days the precinct makes things you can eat instead. Fix & Fogg sells its small-batch peanut butter straight from a window in the wall. Wellington Chocolate Factory does bean-to-bar chocolate a few steps along, with tastings and tours at its Eva Street home. Shelly Bay Baker covers the fresh bread and pastries straight from the oven.
Street art fills the walls in between, so the walk through is worth it even if you buy nothing. You won't manage that, though. A jar of peanut butter or a wrapped chocolate bar is the easiest Wellington gift going.
From James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor, it's a 15-minute stroll down Willis Street into the Cuba quarter. Go hungry and come back with your pockets full.
