Auckland Harbour Bridge Bungy Jump

Some people photograph the Auckland Harbour Bridge. Others jump off it. The Auckland Bridge Bungy is a 40-metre leap from a purpose-built pod slung under the bridge deck, run by AJ Hackett, the crew who have been throwing people off things since 1988. Ask at check-in and they'll try to dunk your head in the Waitematā on the way down. It's the only ocean-touch bungy in the world, and yes, that counts as swimming in Auckland Harbour.

Not everyone has to jump. Spectators can walk out to the pod and watch their mates take the plunge, which is its own kind of entertainment.

You'll find it at Westhaven Reserve, at the city end of the bridge. It's a five-minute drive from The Chancellor on Hobson, or a longer walk along the Westhaven Promenade if you need time to talk yourself into it. Allow two hours, wear closed shoes, and come home with the story everyone asks about.
