Opened in 1862, Melbourne Zoo is Australia’s oldest zoo and a much-loved family day out just outside the city. More than 320 species can be found across its grounds and immersive habitats.

See gorillas in the Gorilla Rainforest, watch orangutans move through the treetops, step inside the walk-through Butterfly House and wander through Lemur Island. Big-cat fans can spot Sumatran tigers and explore Lion Gorge, home to some of the zoo’s most impressive carnivores. With plenty of paths, play areas and places to stop along the way, it’s a fun and easy family day out in Melbourne.

Melbourne Zoo is open every day from 9am to 5pm. Children under 16 visit free on weekends, Victorian public holidays and Victorian Government school holidays. Royal Park Station on the Upfield line sits just across from the zoo’s entrance, making it an easy trip from Hotel Grand Chancellor Melbourne.
