Space Place at Carter Observatory

At the top of Wellington Botanic Garden, Space Place at Carter Observatory is a planetarium and observatory dedicated to space, astronomy and Māori star knowledge. It’s a 20-minute uphill walk from James Cook Hotel Grand Chancellor Wellington, or you can take the Cable Car to the upper terminus right beside it.

Inside, full-dome planetarium shows and interactive galleries explore space, science, Matariki and Māori navigation. You can also see the historic 1867 Thomas Cooke refractor, with telescope viewings available on clear nights.

Open mostly in the evenings, Space Place is a fun choice for an after-dark adventure, while the indoor planetarium and galleries also make it a good indoor option. Around Matariki, look out for seasonal programmes and events celebrating the Māori New Year.
